A loft conversion is usually the quickest way to add a proper bedroom to a Hounslow home without losing any garden. Most houses here are 1930s semis or terraces, and both convert well.
On a 1930s semi with a hipped roof, the classic Hounslow conversion is a hip to gable with a rear dormer, which turns a cramped loft into a full-height bedroom with room for an en-suite. On a terrace, a rear dormer or an L-shaped dormer over the back addition gives the most space. If you want to keep the roof as it is, a Velux conversion is quicker and cheaper.

How much does a loft conversion cost in Hounslow?
A Velux conversion typically costs £30,000 to £40,000. A rear dormer is usually £40,000 to £55,000, and a hip to gable with rear dormer on a semi is usually £50,000 to £65,000. Adding an en-suite adds roughly £6,000 to £10,000.
Do I need planning permission?
Most rear dormers and hip to gable conversions fall under Permitted Development, as long as they stay within the volume limits and are not in a conservation area. We recommend getting a Lawful Development Certificate from the council for peace of mind, and we handle that for you.
Is my loft tall enough?
As a rule of thumb you need about 2.2 metres from the top of the ceiling joists to the underside of the ridge. Many Hounslow 1930s semis have that. We measure it on the free survey.
How long does it take?
A dormer conversion usually takes 8 to 12 weeks. A Velux conversion takes 4 to 6 weeks. You can normally stay at home during the work.
